Deborah
Coclanis,
a native North Carolinian, graduated with honors in piano performance
from the North Carolina School of the Arts. She continued her
music studies in New York with Irwin Freundlich of the Juilliard
School and Piero Weiss at Columbia University, and received
a master's degree from Columbia in historical musicology.
Deborah
has been with Women's Voices since 1995: Her critically acclaimed
accompaniment is an essential element of the
chorus.
A Chapel
Hillian since 1984, Ms Coclanis is active in the local music
scene both playing and teaching. She has worked as coach and
accompanist at Duke (including the Opera Workshop) and at UNC.
In addition to Women's voices, she accompanies various chamber music and vocal recitals.
She also
plays harpsichord continuo for Chapel Hill’s annual community
Messiah-sing. Keenly interested in innovative programming, Ms.
Coclanis has provided music for “Shakespeare in September”
a production of Shakespeare & Originals in Durham and “Vincent,”
a lyric entertainment based on the life and works of Edna St. Vincent
Millay. In addition, she has done music direction and sound design
for the Deep Dish Theater Company.
She and
her husband Peter have two sons.
